How to identify the quality of HPMC?
The quality of HPMC is the most important factor when purchaser select HPMC. Many purchasers are confused about how to distinguish the quality of HPMC. Today, I will write an article to help you comprehensively understand how to distinguish the quality of HPMC.
The parameters influence HPMC quality
At first you have to check several parameters to identify the quality of HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose).
1.Water-retaining property
Water retention ensures hydration reaction to prevent cracking.
2.Thickening properties
Thickening property and water-retaining property determines the difficulty of using a mortar.
3.Stability
High stability ensures uniform and accurate cps for HPMC. The factory achieves this through strict quality control.
4.Gel formation
Low quality HPMC has lower gel formation temperature which reduce HPMC water-retaining property.
5.Ash content
High quality HPMC has low ash content.
6.Degree of substitution
The higher the DS, the better the solubility of the HPMC in water. You can measure the DS using NMR and infrared spectroscopy.
7.Viscosity
Viscosity is an essential parameter to check the quality of HPMC as it affects the flow behavior of a solution. It can be measured using a viscometer or a rheometer.
8.Moisture content
The moisture content of HPMC should be controlled within a specific range to avoid clumping, microbial growth, and degradation of the material during storage and handling. It can be measured using a Karl Fischer titrator.
9.Particle size
The particle size should be uniform for good dispersion in a formulation. It can be measured using a particle size analyzer.
10.PH stability
The pH stability of HPMC is critical to determine its resistance to acidic or alkaline conditions. HPMC should retain its properties under different pH conditions depending on the intended application.

HPMC has lots of applications which are quite different in many ways.
Some practical methods to identify the HPMC quality
1.The high quality HPMC has a loose visual condition and a small bulk density while the low one has very good fluidity and feels heavier, which is significantly different from the genuine appearance.
2.The high quality HPMC aqueous solution is clear, the light transmittance is high, and the water retention rate is >97% while the low one aqueous solution is relatively dirty, and the water retention rate is difficult to reach 80%.
3.The high quality HPMC should not smell ammonia, starch and alcohol while the low one can usually smell all kinds of smells.
4.The high quality HPMC is fibrous under a microscope or magnifying glass while the low one can observe granular solids or crystals under a microscope or magnifying glass.
HPMC laboratory testing
They usually would test moisture content, degree of substitution, ash content, gel temperature, viscosity, binding property, water retention, PH value in laboratory testing. They will also design experiments based on specific applications.
